Vaikhanasa
The holy sages of India, who did not have anything other than the welfare of humanity in their mind, left behind their own spiritual experiences in the form of diverse traditions so that the next generations live in peace, happiness and spiritual awakening. Those who worked in that direction are the Vaikhanasas.
There are frequent and copious references in Vedas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Purana's and other ancient elevating literatures referring to Vaikhanasas.
It is these holy men of Vaikhanasa tradition who have been rendering services for millennia to Lord Venkateshwara on the Tirumala hills, Tirupati and also to Lakshminarayana in various forms in other Vaishnava kshetras.
It is no exaggeration to say that, except a few, none among the crores of devotees who visit the Tirumala hills, know anything about the Vaikhanasa Agama, or that the services to Lord Venkateshwara are carried out based on the rich traditions and practices prescribed in Vaikhanasa Agama.
Lord Vishnu himself taught sage Vikhanasa the mysteries of worship in the holy forest of Naimisharanya. Therefore, Lord Vishnu himself is the originator of the Agama.
It was sage Vikhanasa who gave this Agama to the world directly through his four disciples, namely Atri, Marichi, Kashyapa and Bhrigu. Henceforth, he is said to be the Pravartaka of this Agama and hence the Vaikhanasa Agama is named after him.
